Truth and proof separate once a formal system has limits
Joel David Hamkins discusses Godel incompleteness, truth versus proof, and the halting problem. The unsettling point isn't that mathematics becomes arbitrary. It's that sufficiently expressive formal systems can contain statements they can't settle internally, forcing care about which axioms and system a proof assumes.
