A war’s causes aren’t identical to every soldier’s motives
The chapters separately address what caused the Civil War, slavery, political leadership, and military figures. That structure matters because explaining secession and war isn't the same task as reconstructing why every participant fought. Keeping those levels distinct prevents individual anecdotes from displacing documentary evidence about institutions and political aims.
