#502 – Psychiatry, Insane Asylums, Mental Illness, ECT, Lobotomies, Freud & Jung
The chapter list moves through asylums, eugenics, lobotomy, insulin coma therapy, and ECT. That sequence highlights how authority and institutional momentum can preserve harmful practices. It doesn't show that every treatment is equivalent, but it does make independent evidence, patient consent, and meaningful review central measures…

Caracalla's motives seem less certain than the consequences
Kaldellis is clear about how much is uncertain in Caracalla's decision to extend citizenship. He discusses religious and tax explanations without settling on one. I'd keep that uncertainty in the account. The change in who could hold power can be examined even when the emperor's reason for signing the edict remains unclear.

Relative pitch is the part I'd practice
I'd spend practice time on hearing intervals. Beato says relative pitch includes recognizing notes played together as well as one after another. Following the movement of a melody or a chord progression sounds useful to me. Being able to name an isolated note would be impressive, but I'd use the relationships between notes more.

The unchanged DNA makes the cell arrangement worth examining
Levin's description of anthrobots makes me want to understand what the new arrangement changes. He says adult human tracheal cells can form these moving structures without editing their DNA. That makes the conditions around the cells central to the experiment. I'd like to see which changes in those conditions produce which behaviors.

Lex and DHH were testing voice input on different jobs
Lex's long spoken design sessions and DHH's short dictated messages seem like different tests of voice input. DHH describes corrections making short messages frustrating. Lex describes talking through a design while running, then processing the transcript. I'd judge those workflows separately. A mistake in a file name matters differently from…

I'd keep Rosolie's original notes alongside the finished chapter
I'd want Rosolie's original notes preserved alongside the polished chapters. He describes checking his notebooks when writing a scene, then editing it repeatedly. The early record and the finished version serve different purposes. Comparing them would help me see where remembered details became a shaped account.

Rollo's land grant made defending the coast his problem
Brownworth's account of Charles's deal with Rollo makes sense as an attempt to change his incentives. Giving him territory and a place in the local aristocracy gave him something to defend. I'd want to know what Charles could do if the arrangement stopped serving him. Brownworth also describes Normandy growing stronger under later rulers.

The luxury dates made his emergency story easier to believe
The spending before the money request is what matters in Shaw's Tinder Swindler example. She describes luxury dates and private jets before the supposed emergency. Someone who's already demonstrated wealth can make a request for help seem plausible. I'd want the explanation for the payment checked separately from everything impressive that…
