The spending before the money request is what matters in Shaw's Tinder Swindler example. She describes luxury dates and private jets before the supposed emergency. Someone who's already demonstrated wealth can make a request for help seem plausible. I'd want the explanation for the payment checked separately from everything impressive that came before it.

That still asks someone to become suspicious at exactly the moment they think a partner's in danger. Shaw describes a relationship built before the crisis. The pressure to act quickly is part of why checking the story would be hard.

Shaw also points to embarrassment after the fraud. Calling the victims stupid makes disclosure harder. I'd rather hear exactly how the request was made and what made it credible.

The earlier spending could've been real and the emergency could still have been invented. Those are separate claims. That's where I'd focus the discussion of what evidence was available.
