Keep enslaved people’s lives central in historical storytelling
Stories about slavery can become narratives about merchants, officials, campaigners, and legal change while the people subjected to the system appear mainly as evidence. How can a historian document institutions and accountability without reducing enslaved people to what others did to them, especially when the archive preserves unequal amounts about each side?
