Candidate effects versus favorable local conditions
Some candidates outperform a national baseline, but local demographics, opponent quality, spending, and state issues may explain part of the gap. Personal skill shouldn't receive automatic credit. Which comparison would best isolate a candidate effect from the environment around the race?
